Account manager recruitment
Finding the right type of Account Manager candidate is essential
as ultimately they may be the face of your business to clients and
suppliers. Reliable, independent and commercially focussed account
managers are not in huge supply so it is important that you
contract with an agency who understands where to place available
account managers. Our experience within the industry and success
with the candidates who we have placed within account management
jobs speaks for itself.
Has the skills shortage in the North West affected your
search for Account Managers?
One of the main challenges which we have in the region is the
digital marketing skills shortage. This is particularly
applicable to the account management candidate pool as many who
began their career as an account manager has specialised in a
single discipline and moved away from being what is known as an
"all round account manager." Looking specifically at account
managers within direct response advertising agencies, a large
portion of candidates now focus their time on search marketing for
example. This isn't ideal when marketing campaigns have multi
faceted digital channels and a broad knowledge of each channel is
essential.
We have found that account managers have a particularly high
loyalty to their employers which is great for business growth and
stability. This means that the time and investment which business
owners put into their candidates is ultimately a long term
investment for their business. When attempting to attract
candidates to the roles on offer, we would advise on highlighting
the training and development plans. This way, account managers can
be confident that they will develop accordingly in their account
management role.
Generally the breakdown of an account manager is:
- Account Assistant or Junior Account Manager normally is an entry
level position where they should ideally work very closely with an
Account Manager who you see has the greatest potential. That way
you'll develop future account managers with great experience.
- Account Managers tend to have
around 1 or 2 years experience in their particular field. They will
have built solid relationships with suppliers, clients and internal
stakeholders and be able to maintain them. They will begin to
manage junior staff members if capable.
- Senior Account Managers will
work on some of the businesses key accounts and lead a team of
account managers who will learn from the practices on those
accounts. They will normally have 3 or 4 years experience if within
an advertising agency
- Account Directors will have over
4 years experience and be entering the senior management realms.
They will have experience of a range of client types, verticals and
a changing industry which means they are best placed to advise
clients and contribute to internal strategy.

If I’m known for one thing, it’s my dislike of recruitment agencies. I don’t dislike The Candidate. They didn’t stick many people in front of me. They stuck someone in front of me who was right both in terms of skill set and personality. We took them on. I like that.
Simon, PushON
